    About Pakistan

    Officially the Islamic republic of Pakistan is a sovereign country in South Asia. It is the sixth most populous country and the 36th largest country in the world in terms of area. The term 'Pakistan' means 'land of the pure'. As a result of Pakistan movement led by Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan was created as an independent nation for muslims. Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. Pakistan is characterized by military rule, political instability and conflicts with neighbouring India. The capital of Pak is Islamabad with the largest city being Karachi. Official languages are urdu and English. Currency is Pakistani rupee. The national anthem of Pakistan is Qomi Tarana (Pakistan Zindabad). Chakor is national bird of Pakistan. National flower of Pakistan is Jasmine. National animal is Markhor.

    History of Pakistan

    Pakistan is a muslim state that partitioned from India after independence. Pakistan was proclaimed Islamic republic on 23 March, 1956. Field marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan seized power and ruled until March 1969 (He was responsible for Presidential system). He was deposed by General Yahya Khan. In elections, Z.A. Bhutto's Pak people party won in west while Sheikh Mujibur Rahamn's Awami league won in the east. East Pakistan proclaimed sovereignty. Bangladesh war ended in 1971`. Yahya handed power to Bhutto, who was later overthrown. General Zia-ul- haque took over. Bhutto was executed. Gen. Zia died in a plane crash. Benazir assumed office as Prime Minister, only to be later dismissed. Nawaz Sharif took over, but was dismissed in 1993. PPP came to power with Ms. Bhutto once again as PM. She was again dismissed later and Nawaz Sharif was sworn as PM again as 13th PM. Tensions between military and Shariff ended in a coup and PM Sharif was exiled. Gen. Musharraf was appointed as President. Musharraf survived an assassination attempt and it was decided for him to remain as President until 2007 elections. Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December and her husband was elected. Pakistan holds a major area of Kashmir and has been declared a terrorist country.

    Geography of Pakistan

    Pakistan has border with India, Afghanistan, Iran, China and water border with Oman, Arabian sea, gulf of Oman. Pak's total size is 803,940 sq. km, slightly less than twice the size of California. It is in Asia with flat Indus plain in east, mountains in north and northwest, Balochistan plateau in west. Lowest point is Indian ocean and highest point is K2 (Mount Godwin- Austen) at 8611 meters. Its major landforms are Indus river valley, Hindukush, Karakoram mountains, Pamir mountains, K2, Balochistan plateau, Thar desert, Cholistan desert. Major water bodies are Indus, Jhelum, Ravi, Kabul, Manchar lake, Kheenjhar lake, Gulf of Oman, Arabian sea. Famous places are Jinnah Mausoleum, Minaret of Pak, Badshahi Mosque, Rani Kot fort, Hingol National Park, Trango towers, Port grand, Tomb of Jahangir,Mohanjodaro, etc.

    Climate of Pakistan

    Pakistan is in the warm temperate zone. There are hot summers and cold winters. Winds in winter blow northeast to southwest and reverse in summer to bring the monsoon. Cold weather season from December through February.

    Natural resources of Pakistan include land, extensive natural gas supply, some oil, hydro power potential, coal, iron ore, copper, salt and limestone.

    Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan. Other cities are Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Gilgit, Zhob, Lahore, Sialkot, Quetta, Wazirabad, Gujranwala, Multan, Gwadar, Mirpur Khas.
    Main tourist attractions are Lahore, which is an example of Grande architecture in historical buildings from the mughal area, Lake Saiful Mulk, Cancordia, Karakoram where people see many snow covered peaks, Karimabad, Karachi, which has a fine collection of Anglo- Indian architecture. There is famous Sunday bazaar.

    Pakistan has many delicious dishes. Pakistani cuisine is usually meat oriented. Rice dishes and kebabs are prominent. Rice haleem, Chapli kebab, tika, and mutton Karachi are famous. Paranthas, Sheermal with tea or lassi, Chole-Kulche, Shami kebab, queema(minced meat) are eaten. Fruits include mangoes, apples, melons, bananas. There are breads such as roti or naan, aloo gosht, Chicken karahi, tandoor rotis are popular. There is nihaari, pulses, kofte, kheer, gulab jamun, Shahi tukray, gajraila, kulfi or rasmalai. Some typical snacks are dahi bhalla, Chaat, Chanamasala, Pakora and papar. Bhailpuri, samosas, bason pakoras, golgappay are famous. Makkee ki roti- sarson ka saag ae there. In rice dishes there are Maash pulao, Matar pulao, Murgh pulao and Yakhni pulao.

    Pakistan Culture

    Pakistan comprises many ethnic groups like Panjabis, kashmiris, Sindhis, Muhajirs, makrani, Baloch, Pashtun, ancient dardic, Wakhi, Baltistani, Burusho etc. Pakistan has good urdu language and poetry. Poetry of Mirza ghalib, Iqbal, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Omar Khayyam are popular. Traditional music like ghazals, quawwalis are famous.
    In sports, national sport in Pak is field hockey. Cricket, Squash, football are popular.
    Among festivals, there is Ramadan, Chand raat, Eid, Milaad un nabi, Muharram, Jashn-e-Baharan, Christmas, Independence day, Defense day parade, etc.

    The famous international airports are- Jinnah International airport(Karachi), Allama Iqbal International airport(Lahore), Islamabad International airport (Islamabad), Bacha Khan international airport(Peshawar), Sialkot international airport (Sialkot).
    Among airlines, there is Royal airlines, Shaheen air, Star air aviation, Vision air international, Airblue, Askari aviation, Air Indus etc.
