History of Puerto Rico
The island's first inhabitants migrated from the Orinoco river valley. They were referred to as archaic, more than 2000 years ago. When the Spanish first arrived here, including Christopher Columbus, they faced a culture known as the Taino (parts of Arawak ethnic group) The inhuman treatment of the natives sparked a rebellion in 1511, but was subdued. The dismal conditions of forced labourer and diseases made the natives lost. Then Africans were brought as slaves, and three cultures, Taino, Spanish and Africans, created the foundation. The island was named Puerto Rico, and the main port was San Juan. European civilization also came to knew about Puerto Rico and there were settlements.
Geography of Puerto RicoThe island of Puerto Rico is in Caribbean sea, 1000 miles from Miami. There is Atlantic ocean in north, Caribbean sea in south, Virgin passage in the East and Mona passage in west. Puerto Rico is the smallest in Greater Antilles islands which include Cuba, Espanola and Jamaica. Puerto Rico includes small islands the largest of which are Vieques, Culebra and Mona. The island is 111 miles long and 36 miles wide. The highest point in Cerro Punta which is at 4390 feet in center of Cordillera Central.
There are fertile mountains and plains. The south of this island is an arid area with dry desert vegetation. There are many small rivers the largest of which are Rio de la Plato, Rio Grande de Loiza, Ri Grande de Manati etc. The metropolitan area of San Juan to Bayamon are the most populated area with approximately 1/3rd of the island's total population.
Climate of Puerto RicoThe climate of Puerto Rico is tropical. Temperature is around 27 degree centigrade in lower elevations and 21 degree centigrade in mountains. Trade winds are across the island year round. The rainy season stretches from April to November. About a quarter of annual rain occurs during tropical cyclones.

Puerto Rico's festivals are - San Sebastian street festival, Fiesta de Reyes Magos, Festival de las flores, Festival Pablo Cassals, San Blos Half marathon. Traditional games of Puerto Rico are batey(ball games) and Circle game. There used to be races, tests of physical strength and fishing competitions. In these games, while the winners were treated like heroes and champions, the losers were sacrificed.
In modern times, popular sports are baseball, basketball, boxing, cockfighting, football etc.
