    About Peru

    Peru (Officially the republic of Peru) is a country in western south America. It is divided into 25 regions. It is a developing country with a poverty level around 25.8 per cent. It's capital is Lima and the ethnic groups are Amerindian, Mestizo, and white. The language of Peru are Spanish, Quechua and Aymara. Total area is 1,285,216 sq. km. Population is 31,151,643(41st rank) Its currency is Nuevo sol. The national anthem of Peru is "Marcha Nacional" (Trans. National march). The national bird is the Andean cock –of-the-rock which is only found in the Andes. The national animal is Vicuna. The national flower of Peru is the Cantuta, also known as the "Inca magic flower".

    History of Peru

    Ancient Peru saw prominent Andean civilizations and later the Incas empire saw defeat by the Spanish. Peru's independence was declared in 1821, with the remaining Spanish forces defeated in 1824. Then military rule was declared and later, it gave way to democracy in 1980. There were economic problems and violence. President Alberto Fuji Mori was elected in 1990. There was a dramatic turn around in economy and guerrilla activities were curtailed. Later the President lost and there were new elections in 2001, and Alejandro Toledo was Peru's first democratically elected President of native American ethnicity.

    Geography of Peru

    Total land area is 1,285,220 sq.km slightly smaller than Alaska. The region is South America. There is western coastal plain, high and rugged Andes in center (Sierra), and eastern lowland jungle of Amazon basis(Selva). The lowest point is Pacific ocean and the highest point is Nevado Huascaran(6768 m). Major cities are Lima, Arequipa, Trujillo, Chiclayo etc.

    The climate of Peru is somewhat a cooler tropical climate. Average temperature is around 76 degree farenheit . Average rainfall at peru can range from 150 inches in the rainy tropical forests to less than two inches at the coast.

    Peruvian cuisine, both traditional and modern, has variety.     Peruvian culture reflects multiple layers of a great civilizations. The lost city of Macchu picchu remind us of mighty Inca empire. Andes is vast mountain range where millions of highland Indians who have preserved their traditions. The amazon basin covers half of peru showing high species diversity. The three belts- Amazon basin, Andean mountains, a narrow coastal belt, are the examples of great Inca civilization.
    People of Peru are also fond of sports. Soccer, volleyball, bullfighting, cock fighting, tennis, basketball, mountain trekking, mountaineering, surfing, rafting and mountain biking are very popular.
    There are many festivals in Peru. There is Fiesta de la Cruz (festival of the cross), El senor de los Milagros, Inti Raymi (festival of sun), Virgen del Carmen (festival of dance, drinking, revelry), Virgen de la Candelaria (festival of music, dance, costumes), Puno week etc.
